Alex Phan

  • A well-respected figure in the Midwest volleyball community, I bring experience and insight as both a player and a coach. My passion for the sport is woven into every aspect of my life—through my full-time role with the Badger Region staff, my coaching position at Arrowhead High School, and even in my free time, where I continue to compete in tournaments locally and nationwide. I pair this love for volleyball with strong interpersonal and communication skills, allowing me to connect with athletes and help them maximize their potential through a meaningful and impactful coaching experience.

  • My coaching philosophy centers on developing a deep understanding of the game—not just running drills or repeating actions. I believe in teaching athletes why we do what we do, not just how to do it. Repetition builds muscle memory, but it's a high volleyball IQ that truly sets athletes apart.

I take a macro approach to the game, helping players grow by fostering a strong learning mindset. Through film review and detailed feedback, we identify specific areas for improvement, rather than relying solely on generalized practice plans. This level of intentionality leads to meaningful growth and helps athletes see the game in a new way.

Communication is at the heart of volleyball, and I model that through my coaching. I actively listen to what each athlete hopes to gain from our sessions and tailor my approach to meet those goals. By equipping them with both technical tools and communication skills, I help players feel confident not just in their play, but in how they interact with teammates and coaches throughout their club and high school seasons.

Ultimately, my goal is to empower athletes to think critically, communicate effectively, and compete with purpose—on and off the court.

  • “Looking back on my time at Arrowhead High School, working with Coach Alex was one of the best experiences I’ve had in volleyball—hands down, he’s been my favorite coach. He struck the perfect balance between being fun, incredibly knowledgeable, and serious when it mattered most. That mix created a team environment where we felt comfortable being ourselves, but also knew when it was time to lock in and compete. Even on the days when the boys and I were maybe a little too loose, he kept us grounded while still making it fun.”

“Coach Alex is an absolute volleyball nerd in the best way possible. He genuinely cared about helping each of us grow, and what stood out most to me was his patience and adaptability. He never forced one “right” way to play. Instead, he looked at how each of us moved and played naturally, then gave suggestions to help refine our game. If something didn’t feel right after giving it a shot, he worked with you to build on your style—not change it. That approach made a huge impact on me as a setter. I don’t set like most players, and he never tried to change that. Instead, he gave me the tools to improve my own rhythm, timing, and understanding of the game’s flow.”

“Coach Alex didn’t just teach volleyball—he taught me how to think the game. I honestly don’t know where I’d be without his guidance. I’ve had a few not-so-great coaches in my journey, so having someone like him was a total game changer. I really believe everyone deserves a coach like Coach Alex at least once in their life. I couldn’t recommend him more highly.”
